In addition to his legal career, Colley was a member, and leader, of many organizations at the local, state, and national levels. Most notably, he served as Chairman of both the West Coast Region and the National Legal Committee for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Colley represented the NAACP in legal cases dealing with fair housing and employment practices, as well as public education. A lifelong member, Nathaniel often spoke at NAACP events, and was honored by the organization numerous times, including the “Fight for Freedom Award” in 1954.
